Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU School of Medicine is to improve health through exceptional and innovative discovery, training, and patient care. Guided by a strategic plan, the VCU School of Medicine strives to achieve its vision of being known for the accomplishments of trainees, faculty, staff, and alumni in the laboratory, classroom and clinic.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding faculty leader for the role of Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who will play a major role in advancing the faculty experience for more than 1,300 clinical and basic health science faculty members. Reporting directly to the Dean, and working collaboratively with the leadership team, the SADFA provides leadership and oversight of programs to promote faculty development, support faculty advancement, and create a culture of scholarly excellence and a positive environment for research, education and clinical care.

This position is only open to current faculty members in the School of Medicine. It will require 80 percent of the faculty members time for their role as Senior Associate Dean. The remaining 20 percent will be dedicated to responsibilities of the department from which the individual receives a faculty appointment.

Position Responsibilities:

In this high-profile position, this individual will lead a vision to provide innovative career development programs and training, wellness, recruitment and retention, career development, including promotion and tenure, and governance and policies for faculty members. The SADFA provides oversight of, and guidance for, all key processes of faculty governance. They will manage processes of faculty appointments and promotions, oversee the selection of faculty members for SOM standing committees, and lead faculty training and development programs.

Required Qualifications:

Accomplished Leader - Candidates will have strong credentials in their field and enthusiasm for being part of the leadership of a dean’s team for one of the largest medical schools in the country.

Progressive Academic Leadership and Administration - Minimum of 10 years of experience as a faculty member in an academic medical center with demonstrated executive leadership roles in a productive, complex research institution and/or academic medical center with experience in the administration of faculty affairs, faculty development, governance and/or promotion and tenure.

Faculty Recruitment and Retention - Successful experience attracting, retaining, and developing high-performing individuals and teams. Familiarity with academic rank and faculty promotion.

Commitment to Community - Evidence of strong commitment to professionalism, inclusion and collaboration to create an environment in which all members can thrive and contribute.

Accreditation - Experience with accreditation processes and standards for medical education, particular as they relate to faculty affairs and governance.
