Job Duties

Arlington County General District Court is looking for a dynamic individual that is looking for a position that requires leadership, strong multi-tasking abilities, exceptional inner-personal skills, and customer service. The ability to create and foster positive working relationships with staff and colleagues is crucial to success in this position. Position requires an individual to discuss and explain complicated courtroom procedures and policies to the public through phone or in person. Furthermore, position requires daily interaction with staff, judges, attorneys, and law enforcement personnel. The Supervising Deputy Court Clerk (Grade 12 in Northern Virginia) is assigned operational responsibilities in a high-volume office with frequent deadlines. Individual will direct or personally handle the operational activities required for efficient caseload processing in the following areas: service to the public, intake, records management, and sales processing.

A critical aspect of this position is personnel management. A qualified candidate would be committed to getting to know staff, their strengths and weaknesses and assist them in elevating their job performance in all aspects of their responsibilities. Furthermore, a candidate would need to be able to demonstrate both consistent and firm treatment of staff as well as empathy and understanding and learn to manage a balance between being firm and empathetic. These aspects would be performed and guided with the assistance of administration.

A qualified candidate would also need to demonstrate their understanding of the administration’s goals and mission for the organization. Part of the job is approaching decision making and the ability to provide direction from a standpoint that not only addresses the immediate issue, but also the “bigger picture” ideals and objectives of the organization.

A qualified candidate will feel comfortable training staff as equally to listening and allowing input from staff for the betterment of the organization and overall operation. Daily, processing and filing court documents; answering phone inquiries; and handling a wide range of complex clerical tasks across Civil, Traffic and Criminal Divisions as well as data entry; alpha/numeric filing. The qualified candidate is committed to interacting with the public, staff, external or internal agencies and divisions in a friendly, courteous, and patient manner. In addition, position delivers high degree of customer service by providing information in person and by telephone, resolving problems, and assessing fines and costs.

Minimum Qualifications

Most competitive applicants will have a minimum of five years supervisory and/or court experience, legal and judicial knowledge, and will demonstrate competence in areas of responsibility as well as automated financial and records management systems and personal computers. Proficiency in Microsoft Word is required. High school diploma or equivalent is required; college degree or courses are preferred. Experience within the field will be considered as an acceptable substitute for higher education.
